The first of its kind in Australia, the Bundha Sports Centre is a groundbreaking achievement in vertical design and engineering innovation, redefining how space is utilised in dense inner-city environments.
The structure integrates four highball multi-purpose courts, a dedicated futsal court, gymnasium, café and lounge, community rooms, change facilities, and a welcoming foyer and reception area—all stacked within a compact urban footprint. This vertical configuration required complex structural engineering solutions, including high-load bearing systems, vibration control, and long-span framing to accommodate dynamic sporting activities across multiple levels.
From a civil engineering perspective, the project involved intricate site remediation and foundation works, given its location within the historic Fitzroy Gasworks Precinct.
This innovative centrepiece aligns with the Victorian Government’s vision for the precinct, setting a benchmark for sustainable, space-efficient community infrastructure in metropolitan Melbourne.
